Literacy is more than being able to read and write. Children’s language and literacy development take place in everyday activities accompanied by an interesting talk with lots of new vocabulary words.
When children see the signs on the road such as the big ‘M’ of the McDonalds sign, it is visual literacy.
Being able to see and understand some of the links between what they experience and what they say and what is written down through such activities as telling a story that gets written and ‘read’, is literacy.
Following a recipe when baking a cake is Literacy.
